The Friends of The Mater Foundation began in 1999 and is the principal fundraising arm for The Mater Private Hospital, North Sydney. The mission of the Foundation is to provide funding to support the Mater’s compassionate approach to healthcare and to contribute to the highest standard of patient care, education and medical research at the hospital.
Over the past 25 years, the Foundation has flourished and has made a significant contribution to the success of the Mater Hospital. Thanks to our generous donors, the Foundation has now facilitated gifts in excess of $77 million, including a $40 million donation to establish The Poche Centre, home of Melanoma Institute of Australia.
The Foundation only supports the Mater Hospital, North Sydney, which is part of St Vincent’s Health Australia, one of Australia’s largest Catholic not-for-profit health care providers.

Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.

The Mater receives no government funding and is a not-for-profit private hospital, providing mission-based care. The philanthropic support provided by the Foundation allows the Mater to offer facilities, undertake research and have staff available that give it a significant point of difference from other similar healthcare providers.
The Foundation has assisted the Mater to:
Purchase new and much-needed medical equipment
Establish unique, new facilities including The Patricia Ritchie Centre for Cancer Care & Research, the Kay Van Norton Centre for Wellbeing, the Poche Van Norton Special Care Nursery, the Pagent Family Obstetric Theatre and the currently under construction, Ritchie Family Centre for Supportive & Palliative Care and The Duncan Family Day Surgery Centre.
Secure academic appointments in medical and surgical oncology
Support further nurse education and staff training programs
Support ground-breaking research projects across the Mater Campus

Yes, leaving a gift in your will to The Friends of The Mater Foundation is a meaningful way to ensure that the Mater continues to provide excellence in healthcare for future generations.
Bequests greatly support our work and assists us in planning for to meet the Mater’s future needs. All gifts have an impact, provide meaning to our work, and are very much appreciated. There are many ways to leave a bequest including:
Nominating a specific amount of money to the Foundation
Leaving a specific item to the Foundation, such as property or shares
Nominating to leave a percentage of your estate for the Foundation
Leave the residue of your estate to the Foundation, once your friends and family have been provided for.

Yes, The Friends of The Mater Foundation is delighted to help support the ongoing education and development of Mater nurses so that they can continue to provide the highest quality care for the patients. The annual Pamela Hession Nurse Scholarship invites applicants from any full time or part time registered nurse or midwife to undertake post graduate studies in their speciality area. The Scholarship has been established in memory of Mrs Pamela Hession who was cared for over many years at the Mater’s Patricia Ritchie Centre for Cancer Care and Research. The Foundation also supports nursed education and further training through the Mary Palme Mater Graduate Nurses Bequest.

The Foundation provides salary support for a number of Sydney University academics working at the Mater. As well as caring for patients, the Sydney Uni academics conduct research and provide their patients with access to clinical trials. This is unique in a private hospital setting.

The Friends of the Mater Foundation provides an annual grant funding program to support and enhance high quality patient care, clinical practice, research and education across the Mater Hospital campus. Foundation grants are available to medical clinicians, nurses and allied health professionals at the Mater and will be awarded according to potential benefits to patient care outcomes. The amount of grant funding available each year is determined by the interest earnt on the Foundation’s capital. Click here for more information, to apply or get notified when applications open.
