Building a legacy of care and compassion

Our Work

At The Friends of the Mater Foundation, we're dedicated to enhancing healthcare, fostering innovation, and providing educational opportunities at the Mater Hospital. Through a range of grants and scholarships, we strive to ensure every patient receives the highest standard of care, and that our healthcare professionals have access to the resources and knowledge they need to excel.

Our Grant program is designed to address the immediate and long-term needs of the Mater Hospital. Each year, we invite applications from medical clinicians, nurses, and allied health professionals across the Mater campus.

Through these grants and scholarships, The Friends of the Mater Foundation is proud to support the professional growth of our healthcare providers - and ultimately, the patients they serve.

Annual Grants

Your generous donations supports a grant program, which allows Mater Hospital staff, from doctors and nurses to researchers and allied health professionals, to pursue innovative initiatives. Our selection process ensures funds are allocated where they'll have the most impact. These grants have enabled state-of-the-art equipment procurement, facility establishment, and groundbreaking research projects.

2025 Annual Grants applications are now open

Pamela Hession Development Fund for Nurse Education

This scholarship has been established in memory of Mrs Pamela Hession who was cared for over many years at the Mater’s Patricia Ritchie Centre for Cancer Care and Research.

The Pamela Hession Scholarship recognises exceptional nurses who show dedication and promise in their field. This scholarship enables recipients to pursue advanced education and specialised training, enhancing their clinical expertise and leadership abilities.

The Mary Palme Mater Graduate Nurses Bequest

The Foundation also supports the further education and training of Mater nurses through the MGNA Palme Bequest. In 2014, the Mater Graduate Nurses Association received a bequest from the estate of the late Mary Palme for the purpose of providing an Education Scholarship or Scholarships for Undergraduate Nurses assigned to the Mater Hospital. Ms Palme had an extensive career at the Mater, where she trained and then worked for many years.

The Mary Palme Scholarship is dedicated to supporting allied health professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and social workers, who play a crucial role in the holistic care of our patients.
