ANNUAL GRANTS 
POLICY AND GUIDELINES

The return earned on the investment of the Foundation’s capital fund in the previous financial year, is made available to the Mater Hospital in the form of annual grants. In addition, capital  can be applied for such purpose at the discretion of the Trustee. Foundation grants are  available to medical clinicians, nurses and allied health professionals across the Mater campus. 

Assessment of Grant Applications 

Assessment of grant applications is based on merit and the extent to which the activity for  funding contributes to improving patient care outcomes and how it fits with the Mater hospital’s priorities for delivery of care. 

The Assessment Panel will make recommendations to the Board of Directors, Friends of the  Mater Limited for its consideration and approval for the awarding of the grants 

Terms of Funding  

The amount to be made available for grants will vary each year, depending upon the income  earned on the Foundation’s investments and is at the discretion of the Board of Directors,  Friends of the Mater Limited. 

Grant amounts requested should not include GST. Any GST incurred when the successful grant  is invoiced will be covered by the Mater Hospital. 

All applications must be endorsed by the relevant Department Head

Patient Care Facilities Education Program or Equipment Grant 

An Education or Equipment Grant must be taken up in the year in which it is awarded

Before making an application for a grant for equipment, it is advisable to check if the item is  included in the current Mater Hospital Capital Budget for the Ward/Department. Confirmation  that a facility or equipment has been purchased will need to be made to the Foundation.  

Applicants for education programs must have been in the employment of the Mater Hospital for a minimum of one year for eligibility for an award. The successful applicant must be  committed to remain as an employee of the hospital for one year after receiving the  scholarship 

Funding will not be provided for equipment for private practices. 

A simple report, detailing the outcomes achieved, must be submitted to the Foundation within  one year.  

Research Grants 

A Research Grant must be taken up in the year in which it is awarded. 

SVHA Human Research Ethics approval must be submitted in writing prior to grant payment. 

Grants will not be paid directly to individual researchers. The Foundation will pay the grant to the Mater Hospital who will administer the funds as specified by the Foundation.  

Grant recipients should acknowledge The Friends of the Mater Foundation as the funding body in all reports, articles or papers published in print or online, as a result of the grant funding.
