The Poche Van Norton Special Care Nursery
The Poche Van Norton Special Care Nursery has established the Mater Hospital as one of Australia’s leading private maternity units, setting a new standard of care for critically ill newborns.
The Friends of The Mater Foundation fully funded the nursery through the outstanding generosity of our donors, who collectively contributed a remarkable $4.7 million to build, design, and equip the nursery. This incredible contribution included a lead gift of $2 million from Mr. Greg Poche AO and Ms. Kay Van Norton Poche AO, which was crucial to the project's success.
This state-of-the-art facility features 16 individual patient rooms, enabling greater family involvement in daily care. Located on the third level of the Mater’s North West Wing, the nursery provides private rooms equipped with high-quality medical equipment, supporting vital maternal-infant bonding and enhancing recovery for special needs babies.
After years of planning, fundraising, and construction, we proudly opened this facility in June 2015, dedicated to improving the care of premature and low birthweight babies. Thank you to all our donors for making this remarkable achievement possible.
